I have shelves of books on Fashion, style and elegance. But this book by Lucia Van Der Post stands out for me. I like to think of it as a modern day Mrs Beaton, full of practical yet elegant advice. The book covers everything for a stylish life from clothes and make up to relationships and gift buying. I particularly like her advice on how to wear black, because no matter how many times we are told not to wear it, most of us have and want that LBD in our wardrobe and so it is refreshing to be told how to rather than not to.
Although not unique in ideas, it is quite the bible of modern manners and good reminder that good classic advice never dates
I find myself picking it up again and again each time I am stuck for inspiration on buying gifts for those ‘have everything’ people or even what to do for a simple dinner party. The book lives completely up to its title ‘Things I wish my mother had told me – lessons in grace and elegance’.
